Training pants

We are toilet training our Son who’s six going on seven. He wears pull ups but we think he needs to wear training pants as we are not sure if he can feel he’s wet unless he’s really wet. I am finding it very difficult to find pants in his size, most are for younger/ smaller children, does anyone know where I can find some in his size?

  • If you cannot find training pants or have to get him out of training pants if they prove to be ineffective this is the way we found that worked for us, depending on your sons capability/cope-ability and support needs you might be able to do it a similar way, but expect a good many accidents in the first few weeks.
The same thing "not sure if he can feel he’s wet unless he’s really wet" happened to my son (now much older, and also suspected autistic) and we almost ran out of the "ideal window" before school started, it might not work for you but we just put ours in regular kiddie pants and prepared for puddles and to deal with the carpets professionally after it was all over.
Turns out in the end our son was just so intensely focussed on what he was doing we would barely register the warning signs of needing to go before  it actually happened and then when it did it had 0 consequence because of the pull ups. Once the consequence was really felt he started to pay attention more to the warning signs before hand and eventually just took himself up the step to the toilet himself.
It's not nice from a sensory perspective but we found the having to really experience the unpleasantness of being wet prioritised the readily available alternative (the toilet) and it resolved it'self very quickly. Method taken from advice by my Dad who potty trained me (also autistic) by age 3.

Best of luck to you though, toilet training sucks whatever age they are.

  • I done a quick search online, and it seems that Amazon and Etsy have some. Not sure how well they work though.
