  • I'm so sorry your family is going through this.

Someone with autism will understand the facts better than sugar-coating as that may be confusing, although of course you would need to probably withhold some things due to your child's age.

Perhaps just explaining, that like when your child has had a cold or stomach bug, everyone can get ill, and some illnesses are worse than others and require more help from the doctors to get better.  Also, that some medicines are very strong and to fight the naughty illness they sometimes have other effects which might look strange (e.g. losing hair) or not make sense (e.g. throwing up) but that it's good the medicine is strong as it will fight the illness and help daddy.

I don't know how far down the road you want to go with the explanation, and whether you prefer to have a wait and see approach for how to deal with if the worst were to happen.

The thing with ASCs is there is usually co-morbid anxiety, so it is important to ask your child if they have any questions they want to ask, to avoid them keeping it to themselves and worrying.

I hope this reply is OK, I have AS myself and try to be careful not to say the wrong thing but this is a very tricky area for me to know with if I have been sympathetic enough or sounded blunt.
