do you find teachers do enough for kids with ASD?

Hi there,

I am currently doing my dissertation on ASD as I think it is more common then people realise.

I wanted to find out if you thought your class teacher did/does enough for your child, if they do anything good/ bad?  and do you think they are aware of what ASD actually is?

what do you think needs to be improved? what would you like to see happen?

Any comments will really help

Thank you

  • actually, do you think the teachers in your school are the same as you would you say?

  • Thank you soo much for replying to me.

It will be soo interesting for me to see whether teachers do know enough (which, so far it seems they dont at all).

Your right, my uni provided us with a few lectures on the topic, however how much do you actually get to learn from those few lectures.

Its good you moved your daughter and your happy with staff :D

Thank you again for replying :D x

  • Hi,

I think this is a rather interesting topic to do your dissertation on, so good luck with it.

I am a teacher (mainstream) and parent of an ASD child.  As a teacher, I have had no training whatsoever in ASD.  During my PGDE there was an optional lecture on a Thursday evening on general SEN but I didn't attend as I had to get my daughter.

Looking at both sides of the situation I find it shocking how little teachers know.  Unless you are lucky enough to be a pupil with a very enthusiastic and caring teacher the likelihood is that your class teacher will have no training and know next to nothing.  There is an expectation that teachers understand ASD, but the bottom line is that (generally) we know very little.

Putting my parent hat on, thankfully my daughter is now in an ASD unit and the staff are amazing, but she had to be moved out of mainstream because staff simply didn't understand.

I hope this helps and do get back in touch if I can be of any more use.

    Good luck,

    Freya x
