When did you autistic child start to speak?

I was just wondering at what age your autistic child began to speak?

My son has just turned 2 and doesn't really have any words (was making progress but seems to have regressed. ) I suppose my biggest fear in all of this is that he will never talk.
He is starting speech therapy this week and I'm praying they will be able to help him.
How common is it for autistic children to never speak? Sorry if that is an insensitive question, this is all very new to us.
  • Hi - don't worry yet!  My son didn't speak till he was 5, then he said a 6 word phrase whilst at school.  His pronounciation was quite poor but speech therapy were vg + over time sorted things out for him.  He could understand single words + short phrases before he spoke.  He could also write some single words before then, so his speech came later.  A lot of communication is non-verbal which can prove problematic for our children.  Things such as reading expressions, body language etc.  It's not an insensitive question.  I think parents do hope their child will speak, but with our children it sometimes takes longer.
