15 Year Old Male - vocally exhausting/frustrating himself?!

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. My 15 year old son and I are both autistic. My son’s condition is more produced but he is a complete hero and tackles life with more confidence and bravery that I could ever hope to. One issue we share is our poor communication skills, I have spent 49 years perfecting masking alas my boy hasn’t developed such skills. This is where I would value your input. My son’s communication is limiting his personal and his social development. My son is verbal, in fact it’s almost as if we has a compulsion to talk constantly. This isn’t in the form of a one to one communication but a stream of unrelated content and themes. This inability to stop talking seems to frustrate him and actually affects his breathing (he gets short of breath) and his energy levels. It must be exhausting for him as he can’t seem to stop himself.
I have made note of his train of thought for the last five minutes.

Does Jon “a person I work with, not a friend ” love Elvis?

Does Peter “another person I work with, again not a friend who does like Elvis - I think” love Elvis.

Does Dave “our neighbour who we rarely see let alone speak to” know Teletubbies.

You don’t take dogs in hospital!

Does Mr Laurel look like Drew?

Shut the F@&k up!

Im Mickie!

This was punctuated with him demanding I repeat something he has said word for word. Failure to do this quickly or correctly will make him cross. And at least three very big sighs.

Do you feel this could be Tourette’s? I have spoken to an OT and SL therapists and they don’t have a clue! Is this something you have experienced this? I am desperate to help him but no-one seems to know how?

Thank you.
