Female autism

Hi everyone , 

our daughter is due to have an ASD assessment in May at a local centre . Our question to the centre today was :-

 did they do the  assessments slightly differently due to the female nature of it all Dizzy face and the current research surrounding female autism . They couldn’t really give us an answer Dizzy face‍. Is there any difference ? Should we look for centres specialising in female autism only ? We want what is best and that would not be testing that was male orientated . We’re new at all of this and very worried . Any help/ words of wisdom / guidance would be greatly appreciated .

  • All current testing and diagnostic criteria is still based on stereotypical males. What you need to do is find someone that is clued up on autism and its differences in everyone. A key factor is them asking the right questions. Eg. Can you tell if your brother is upset? Yes. This means they’ll think you are competent at reading emotions and faces.

    What they should ask is, How can you tell your brother is upset. This allows a reply of He goes very quiet and just sits there, and no one can make him laugh, for example.

    The Lorna Wing centre are adept at doing the assessment in a way that recognises female presentation better, and I think they use the DISCO assessment type. (Please someone correct me if this is wrong. It’s been a while since I contacted them).
