2 year old with traits of autism

Hi all!

I am new to this site and my health visitor said to be apart of this community as my little boy is 2 and currently waiting for speech and language referal due to being non verbal and showing traits of autism.

Billy shows no eye contact and does not respond to his name. We notice this when he was 13 months old and was told by friends and family it was because of covid but as a mother I just had this gut instinct.

Billy then went into focusing on one thing all the time and nothing else mattering apart from the one thing he was playing with. He then went into having difficulty socialising with other children and when another child or even a adult tried to go near him he would scream and *** out and bite ( I know biting is normal in 2 year olds) but billy would go for a certain part or the body and not just the wherever he could get to. When billy bites he tries his best to grab hold of the head and bite on the fore head.

billy doesn’t feel pain and when falling over will not cry but instead laugh it off and carry on. He has a thing at the minute for sitting oj the window sill where the radiator is but when the radiators come on he puts his feet on and as much as I discourage this he will do anything to get his feet on there!

Billy has just started tip toe walking no matter if he’s wearing shoes or not. He uses high pitch to show he is excited and uses low pitch and screaming to show he’s upset.

im new to all this but could really do with knowing how everyone experiences were whilst they was waiting for a diagnosis I know this is going to be a long process and have even considered private but know it can be expensive.

thanks everyone x

  • Hi Tiegan, how are you and your son?

We are going through something similar and on the “pathway” and feel we have no real guidance on how to deal with behaviours while waiting. Out of interest when did your son start acting out and biting? My son is 20 months and has started doing this in the last few weeks, like you I was also told not to worry but I agree as a mother you know don’t you.
my sons symptoms are very similar, he also doesn’t respond to his name , or any direction / attempt to grab his attention. He rocks and hand flaps almost constantly, tip toe walks and covers his ears a lot. Like your Billy my son also gets distressed when people go near him , which is very hard on his siblings. He doesn’t sleep well and we’re up almost every night with him for hours at a time. He does sometimes give fleeting eye contact though.

I am also looking for diagnosis experiences , how long is the wait in your area? It’s 2 years here, which feels a little shocking to me, but we have found a local charity, they offered us portage and a sen playgroup that we attend. Is there anything like that close to you?

im finding things overwhelming some days I wish there was more help out there c
