Asd waiting list

Hi,

We’re currently waiting for an assessment on my 12yo and just started the referral process again for my 10yo. Anyone know a realistic time scale for assessment? I’ve read that it should be no longer than 6 months (which is absolute bull!) we’ve been waiting a year for second referral for 12yo (first assessment was when they were 3yo and was told they have tendencies but not enough to diagnose).
They both mask outside of home so really hard to get support from school. I feel I’m trapped in my house, being controlled by kids. Im constantly walking on egg shells not wanting to set off a meltdown if they don’t get their own way or something is out of place and routine.
Not sure where to go for support as the groups I’ve found in my area are all family’s with diagnosis and I feel like a fake wanting the support but not having the diagnosis

  • Hi, it’s sounds like life is pretty hard at the moment, the waiting lists vary from county to county, it is a postcode lottery. NICE guidelines state that from referral, assessment shouldn’t be more than three months, in truth waiting lists are between 2 and 3 years. If you are in the UK, you can ask the NHS for a right to choose, the NHS will basically pay for a private assessment, it’s often actually cheaper for them. The main thing is to keep pressuring the powers that be, sometimes they can escalate a case. Alternatively there is the private route, it is about 2k per child. Sorry I can’t be of more help. What may help is that there are quite a few parents on here of autistic children, most are autistic themselves. Feel free to vent or ask questions.
