Pica

Hi there, I’m very new to this forum as my 11 year old child is still waiting on a formal diagnosis however a local family support group suggested I seek support and advice here.

My daughter has had autistic traits since she was a baby and we’ve always found ways to support her/ adapt our home and her life.

I’m struggling at the moment though because her pica has switched from eating toilet roll to eating her own faeces. I seen her do this for the first time in December and I felt like my world stopped. I’ve since smelled her on her breathe on a couple of occasions and she has admitted to doing it on each occasion. My husband and I discussed how we had smelt it on her breathe before I actually saw her eat it but never thought the smell could be caused by pica. Naively we thought she maybe had a tummy bug.

I understand this form of pica is rare (or so the family support agency told me) so was wondering if anyone here had experience of this and how I can deal with it. I’m very very concerned that she will do this outside the house and someone else will notice :(

thank you in advance for any tips or ideas x
