are there any support groups in central london for adults with aspergers

My 41 year old son has recently been diagnosed with Aspergers.

He lives in Central London but, despite living in a busy area, he finds it difficult to make friends.

He finds it difficult to take the first step in reaching out to a support group .....this is the reason that I am posting this message

I think that he would benefit greatly  from meeting other persons on the spectrum to share experiences and participate in Group activities.A slf-organised Group ...or one facilitated by a professional therapist would be ideal

  • Good evening NAS84803.

Central London is busy.  It is full of random people from all walks of life.  I find it difficult to make friends.  I don't know about specific or arranged groups that existing in the big bad city - nor anywhere else to be honest - that sort of thing is not really "my bag" if you know what I mean.  I think people like me (and possibly your son) sort-of love the idea of support groups and having a bundle of friends, but then in reality, just don't really tick that way.

I can tell you what works for me.  I find genuine connection and warmth from people who I just "see around" every day....in London, that is loads and loads of folk.  I go to the same cafes so people start to recognise you and loosely chat with you and your both start sort of caring for each other.  I find that loads of little connections like that sustain me when I am feeling particularly lonely.

The good news is....if your son can do that, one or two of those random circumstantially encountered "associates" will probably become your friends the good-old fashioned way = familiarity.

I have found it impossible to "engineer" or "force" friendships......mine is simply an organically "really big net" approach.

    I hope that helps.

  • Hello ,

You may want to use our Autism Services Directory to search for social groups for your son in his area area that cater for people with an autism spectrum disorder. You can find the Directory here: https://www.autism.org.uk/directory

    All the best,
