Doesn't feel the cold/always hot

My daughter, almost 6 has never slept well, probably slept through the night about 5 times in her life! She wakes up at 1am, 3am etc and when asked about this she says she gets hot and wakes up. I've already turned all radiators off in her room, she likes window open to go to sleep however cold. If I don't do this she struggles to get to sleep....anyone else have this? Also, she never wants to wear a coat, hat, gloves etc and has to have a thin coat even in winter.....anyone else have this or know why? Thanks

  • I am the same. I am always the last person to feel the cold and I don’t like wearing coats, hats or scarves I don’t know the reason why. I used to always get told off growing up for not wearing “appropriate” clothing for the weather. I always sleep with my window open every night of the year too.

  • I am the opposite, very sensitive to cold and in general not great at telling when I get too hot- as a child I would never have taken off my jacket or any layers if mum hadn't reminded me because I just couldn't really tell I was getting hot... even now I quite like to keep on layers... It's very common for autistic people to have sensory issues and struggle with introception/ reading bodily signals (for example hunger/fullness/nausea is another one that I am very bad at... I often can't really tell them apart or feel them).

  • I don't feel the cold as much as others.

  • I'm the opposite- always seem to be colder than others and it hurts my hands sometimes just taking sonething out of the fridge!

It's all a part of sensory issues.  Interception is the sense of knowing how things feel in your body, hot and cold, hungry or thirsty, even needing the loo.  Our mental wiring processes the sensory signals in different ways so that when one feels warm, another feels extra hot.
