Private School????

Hi there, just wondered if anyone could share their experience of the private education system and their child with ASD? Any feedback, advise or just sharing of experience would be much appreciated, thank you.

  • My son started at a state school and after a while it became clear he had problems. The teacher tried her best. Although we initially got a diagnosis of Dyspraxia (now awaiting ASC diagnosis), we never spoke to the senco and very little was done to help him. However, we moved out if the area and the only school we could get a place at was an independent school.

Since moving there we have seen huge improvements in our son. We have termly meetings with the senco. I have regular chats with his class teacher, who tries her best to accommodate my sons needs. As he struggles quite a bit with writting, a computer and IPad was made available immediately. There are only 13 children in his class (whole school has about 70 pupils). This small sizes is ideal, especially when coming from a class size of 30 and 3 class per year group.

The only downside is the cost. Because it's a private school we don't get any help towards the TA cost and some NHS services are not available. However, I am very happy the we ending up sending him private after our brief spell (1.5 years) at state school.
