Son's fear of visiting GP

Our 17-year-old autistic son is terrified of medical intervention of any kind. He has an ingrowing toenail which keeps getting infected and is in a pretty bad state, but we can't get him to visit our GP. The surgery hasn't been hugely helpful - they gave us a telephone appointment than prescribed antibiotics but they've not helped - we really need to get him to the doctor now.

I just wondered if any other parents had been in a similar situation? I'm so worried about him and he is in pain every day but he just won't consent to visiting the GP.

  • i'm not sure if this will help. I'm 18 years old and autistic and i still struggle a lot with going to the gp. and what helps me is when i was told that i don't necessarily need to accept the support but just going to the gp and seeing what they have on offer wouldn't mean i lose anything. id just see the options
