Boxes

Does anyone have problems with items being wrapped or in boxes. My Son hates anything in boxes, cupboards or wrapped up he has to get them out. He may have ADHD too so he isn’t methodical or careful with things but denying him a look inside things just results in frustration a lot of frustration.

  • I can only think it is the unpredictability of a surprise that causes him to hate them. I don’t particularly like wrapped presents unless I know what’s inside. Mostly Because I don’t want to offend anyone and prefer to prepare what I am going to say. Have you tried labelling things like cupboards and boxes. You could even label presents with what’s inside. Are you able to ask him why he is acting that way?

  • Thank you. He is verbal but has a little speech delay but mainly language delay. He recognises letters but can’t read.

  • Maybe use printed pictures or draw what’s inside? To be honest though that makes little to no difference in my house. My younger siblings tip toy boxes out just for the fun of it. Sometimes I think they like the noise of tipping things over. Other times it’s a way of getting attention when we are busy. They have no regard for keeping toys nice, it’s a battle I’ve given up trying to win. If it’s frustration based maybe you could direct his frustration to something else more constructive? I Hope Christmas wasn’t too much of a struggle for you both.

  • No, it was ok. We let him open any parcels and boxes under supervision. He had one or two small upsets when we didn’t have any parcels left but we distracted him and he moved on. Thanks
