PBS is this ABA under another heading?

Hi,

my sons autism school has started undertaking PBS with some

of the children and my son is one of them.  I have read some research around this, and would appreciate any positive insight or otherwise as o want to ensure our knowledge comes from a good place.

my concern is that this is just another ABA approach which is not appropriate for children with disability such as ASD, but I want to check my grounding.

if there are any positive examples, or insights to PBS and children with autism/c I would welcome them.

thanks

  • Behavioural therapies differ between each clinic, their quality of training differs.

PBS is related to ABA but not the same, some relevant adjustments have been made in PBS. The most important thing is listen to your son, don’t ignore his emotions or signs of distress if they tell you to. One of the relevant differences between ABA and PBS is PBS doesn’t withhold the child’s interest, ABA withholds the child’s interest to bribe them.

You could have a read about DIR Floortime, TEACCH, and SCERTS model. Which is best depends on your son’s needs, but be ready to stop if you see an intervention making your son feel abused.
