Opting out of education and GCSEs???????

Hi

My daughter (15 Year 10 diagnosed at 11) is enrolled at the local senior school but has not attended since March 2021.

She completes online lessons with an organisation concentrating on the basic English, Maths, Science and PHSE at the moment.

She is not a fan due to the routine/structure not being her own routine/structure and having to follow a timetable etc. it just doesn't sit well with her. Plus she is not interested in the lessons as it is not what she wants to learn about.

It causes so much anxiety for her and myself that I am wondering what others thoughts are on completely opting out of education and GCSEs until a time when their child feels able to cope with it.

I would like to know if anyone has done this before, how you go about it etc etc. I am seriously considering it to ease the pressure on my daughter so that she can concentrate on what she is interested and what she feels she excels at.

Please let me know your thoughts or advice. I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Kelly

  • What does she want to learn about? Let's see if we can help her assess what she'll need to know.

To start, there is everyday life, which she'll have to navigate regardless. There are always ways to make it not just more tolerable but engaging.

However, first if she can help us understand where her interests lie, it's possible to find a way to help her want to learn. The problem being, if she wants agency over her life, control of her own path, she will need a good deal of education to make that happen as an autistic.
