5 year old not wanting to leave home

So just recently we are really struggling with our 5 year old son. He has lately not wanted to do anything other than run around the home slamming doors and opening cupboard doors etc. We have tried to take him to parks and softplays but he will either flat out refuse to go or at best stay for 10-15 minutes and then want to leave. If we try and get him to stay longer he will have a tantrum.

This can make our life tricky as he is one of a twin and his sister enjoys days out and being out and about.

This mainly applys at weekends and after school as luckily he is fine with going to school.

Any suggestions on helping with this at all?

Thanks

  • Social interaction and social settings tend to exhaust autistics. We use our active intellects to socialise, rather than the passive subconscious, as allistic people do. Your son may use up all his 'social energy' in the setting of school and therefore require time at home, in order to recover. Perhaps taking him out to places with few other people might work. Parks and soft-play areas can be rather crowded with other people.
