sleep support for my 14 years old son

I've just joined the community so hi everyone, it's lovely to see there's a place to go to for sharing, questions, and everything in between :-) 

My son, 14, has been diagnosed a few months back. He's been struggling with sleep since he was little and I'm eager to get him support. Thinking about a sleep clinic and hoping there's one that specialises in ASD teens, but pretty much open to hear about anything. We live in Hertfordshire and willing to drive. 

Any ideas or recommendations will be much appreciated!

  • Sorry he's struggling - if you have any more information, it might help. The 2 main issues are usually an over-active mind and/or Blue Light disrupting circadian rhythm. LEDs and Fluorescents will have too much UV, and sometimes the warm bulbs can have too narrow of a spectrum and create a bit of work for the head to process. I might suggest a small halogen lamp in his room for night. Have a look at lightwaware.org.

    As for the other, one thing that makes the autistic wiring unique is it's ability to make hyper-connexions. If the brain isn't properly exhausted by the end of the night, it might still be calcualting and we can't just shut it off. This can be due to better gamma waves (according to new research) accelerating out of control, these are the waves responsible for a flow-state, Monotropism https://monotropism.org and the ones which fire off during Eureka moments. Autistics can have them far more just by 'design'. But when they don't stop they quickly turn from excitement to anxiety. This is not an emotional response, but something like surplus (unmet) potential. 

    A physical book with puzzles can help, likewise fiction. A notebook and pen next to the bed to write everything down, one page to the next can also help. But it's important to engage the imagination during the day with whatever his interests are and push them to their limit.
