How does ASD affect getting first job / should we get assessed ?

Hello

I would be grateful if anyone could share their advice and experience please.

My 15 year old son has ADHD and was seen recently by CAMHS for a sensory assessment and support re anger / emotional control issues. He is taking his GCSEs this school year and should do quite well. He already has a scribe/ reader / extra time / smaller room for exams because of his processing issues. He does not want to stay on for A levels, instead he wants to start an apprenticeship. I have been told that they are pretty certain that my son also has Autism and should be assessed for this.My son changes his mind about wanting an assessment, my husband is against it and I think he should probably have it now rather than later and decide what he wants to do with the information.

Please can I ask

How have people found teenagers with ASD diagnosis getting apprenticeships or jobs ?

Does ASD affect the cost of driving insurance / travel insurance / getting a mortgage

what are the benefits of someone about to leave school getting a diagnosis

What are the cons of someone having an ASD diagnosis

Any other advice is welcome

Thank you

  • It is not mandatory to tell an employer about anyone's autism status before they are accepted for employment. If, following being employed or after a probationary period, the employer is informed about an employee's autism they are obliged by law not to discriminate against the employee and to offer 'reasonable accommodations', so that an employee's autism does not negatively impact them in their employment environment relative to non-autistic employees.
