How does ASD affect getting first job / should we get assessed ?

Hello

I would be grateful if anyone could share their advice and experience please.

My 15 year old son has ADHD and was seen recently by CAMHS for a sensory assessment and support re anger / emotional control issues. He is taking his GCSEs this school year and should do quite well. He already has a scribe/ reader / extra time / smaller room for exams because of his processing issues. He does not want to stay on for A levels, instead he wants to start an apprenticeship. I have been told that they are pretty certain that my son also has Autism and should be assessed for this.My son changes his mind about wanting an assessment, my husband is against it and I think he should probably have it now rather than later and decide what he wants to do with the information.

Please can I ask

How have people found teenagers with ASD diagnosis getting apprenticeships or jobs ?

Does ASD affect the cost of driving insurance / travel insurance / getting a mortgage

what are the benefits of someone about to leave school getting a diagnosis

What are the cons of someone having an ASD diagnosis

Any other advice is welcome

Thank you

  • You son can't be precluded from an apprenticeship because of Autism, legally end of!  However, as we know some employers are really good about implementing reasonable adjustments and being positive about these things at interview and some are not.  Some will discriminate regardless and mask that as some other reason.

But of course, that all rather depends on whether he chooses to disclose this or not.  Even with a diagnosis, he is under no obligation to disclose this either before or after interview.  So the diagnosis per se need not have any impact at all.  However, not disclosing it will not mean he is not Autistic and it may be and with or without a diagnosis he might find some aspects of the interview process or subsequent working life harder.  Disclosing a diagnosis to the right employer, however, can be hugely beneficial.  They might be only too happy to implement a few adjustments for the prize of securing his skills.  As far as this goes it's not a question or getting a diagnosis or not, but rather disclosing a diagnosis or not once you've got it.  There are legal protections if you do.  The decision will always be his.

Unless anybody knows otherwise, I can't see why a diagnosis would affect insurance or a mortgage.  ASD is not an illness, and therefore not something to be declared as far as I am aware.

The pro/con debate could go on forever with many and varied views, all I can say is I wish to God I had known at his age.  Life could have been a whole lot easier is too many ways to count.
