Sensory seeking in one year old? Possible autism ?

My one year old son is very developmentally delayed. Around 9 months old he wasn’t attempting to sit or bear weight on his legs. He is now 13 months old and still cannot sit. He now sees a physiotherapist and a speech and language therapist because he has issues with weaning. They suggested it may be sensory issues. He is awaiting an appointment with a paediatrician.

the thing I’m most concerned about is his eye rolling. He rolls his eyes to the side and also upwards and at the same time open and closes his hands and stiffens his arms and also rolls his ankles. This can look very distressing sometimes. He also arches his back and looks backwards. His physiotherapist thinks he is sensory seeking through the vestibular system. Does any one have any experience with this type of behaviour and could it relate to autism ? I have an older son recently diagnosed with autism and my second youngest is on the waiting list but they both developed according to their milestones and issues were only picked up when starting school.

  • Difficult to say, but I was a tad late walking and absolutely could not get up and down stairs on my own almost until I went to school.

Yes, I can remember THAT far back!. I was scared. The walls wobbled. The ground was never where I saw it. Everything was about to crash in on me. Even at 4 I had to climb the stairs clutching for dear life to the next stair up. I had to come down by shuffling on my bottom, long after my younger brother could walk down competently.

I had to wait until I was 56 for a diagnosis- but oh boy, makes sense now. My balance and proprioception were way off. Caused so many other problems through life; can't catch a ball, can't ride a bike, can't drive a car, have meltdowns when the dentist tries to put plates in my mouth...list goes on. All due to balance and proprioception.

Sounds minor compared to your lad, but yep! Think the folks you are dealing with this are bang on. Some how this is in his balance and/ or proprioception. Must be terrifying for the poor mite. And yes indeed, could be because he is Autistic or somehow else neurodivergent. But you need a skilled professional view to determine.

  • Thanks Blush yes if you attempt to sit him he throws himself back straight away and will cry if he is put into the sitting position but he is fine in his pushchair. He seems to seek visual stimulation by arching his back and looking behind him. I can’t seem to find much about it online but he shows alot of traits of autism also, hoping for some answers when we see a paediatrician x

  • The other possibility is touch if you try to "sit him". How does he react to other touch?

  • He is so cute!!! I might be completely off but do you think it could be a way to compensate for a lack of control of his head and body orientation and still have things at sight?

  • Bless him, this is rooted in his sensory system and has got to be torture for the poor love.

There is a neurodivergence/ sensory processing issue here quite obviously...high query Autism(?) 'Cos we aren't qualified to say.

In the end you are going to have to follow the diagnostic trail and your son's lead.

In the end, some sensory stuff has caused me a life time of problems, but my Autistim has given me some special gifts too, I would not be without. Look at it this way, the sooner you can get your little 'un his truth, the sooner he can pick his own path.

He will sit, when he's ready. When he can stop the world wobbling for himself. He will find ways to express his inner light. X
