Sensory seeking in one year old? Possible autism ?

My one year old son is very developmentally delayed. Around 9 months old he wasn’t attempting to sit or bear weight on his legs. He is now 13 months old and still cannot sit. He now sees a physiotherapist and a speech and language therapist because he has issues with weaning. They suggested it may be sensory issues. He is awaiting an appointment with a paediatrician.

the thing I’m most concerned about is his eye rolling. He rolls his eyes to the side and also upwards and at the same time open and closes his hands and stiffens his arms and also rolls his ankles. This can look very distressing sometimes. He also arches his back and looks backwards. His physiotherapist thinks he is sensory seeking through the vestibular system. Does any one have any experience with this type of behaviour and could it relate to autism ? I have an older son recently diagnosed with autism and my second youngest is on the waiting list but they both developed according to their milestones and issues were only picked up when starting school.

  • Hello, my son had developmental delays due to hypo priocepcion and hypo vestibular profile as we later found out. He sat at about 12 months and walked at about 18 months. He however developed good motor skills later on. My son is autistic but I have seen other kids with similar sensory profiles in therapies who were not. I forgot to add, using a hammock in which the kid can feel both slight pressure and being swung in many positions, rythms and strengths on a daily basis can help a lot we found.

  • Thank you yes my physiotherapist has tried swinging him in a blanket sort of like a hammock which he seems to enjoy. How did you get manage to get diagnosed with these ? My son is due to see a paediatrician in a few weeks and also occupational therapy it’s just the eye rolling it looks like seizures sometimes with the arms at the same time x
