How to really understand my autistic pre schooler

Hi all

I never really interact due to be being a really shy person ( I’m not autistic  ) but I really want to understand my little boy who has just turned 4 so that I can better support him

we have realised since around January this year  it’s very likely my son is autistic. We are waiting for an assessment but I have done lots of reading books internet etc

From my reading I think he is on the milder side as he is talking, potty trained apart from at night he still wears a pull up but I won’t know really until he is assessed.

what I have been trying to find is to actually understand how my son feels on a day to day basis and why. How he processes information

I don’t always understand his response or lack of response and sometimes I am guessing. I feel helpless and don’t know how to help him when he gets very distressed

a lot of what I find is more techniques and clinical information or steps I can take etc  which is fine to understand autism but doesn’t really help me understand my son and how he feels day to day

i want to see it from his point of view as being so young he can’t explain it to me

Can anyone help me or give me guidance to the best way I can truly understand?

I’ve been looking at books from authors with autism

can anyone recommend one ?

  • Hiya,

This post has truly made my day. I am so pleased that you are trying so hard to understand your son

Potty training at night is hard for many children (even those not on the spectrum) so don't worry too much about that.

    Books for you-

    • Nobody Nowhere (Autobiography of autistic girl and her experiences)
    • Christine McGuinness: A beautiful nightmare (I haven't read it but it might be helpful for you as she has 3 children with autism so has probably felt the way you are feeling)

You might also want to read a couple of books with him, he is getting to the age where he will start to feel different from others so these might help him understand himself a little more. It also might help you...

    Books to read to him-

    • My brother Charlie
    • Uniquely wired
    • We’re amazing 1,2,3
    • Since we’re friends
    • The little senses series (this beach is loud)
    • Just right for you
    • Talking is not my thing
    • Do you want to play?
    • Why johnny doesn’t flap
    • Benny doesn’t like to be hugged

I work in a library so if you need any other book recommendations let me know

    Alisha xx

  • Thank you so much ! I truly appreciate it xxx
