Meltdowns or emotional outbursts in ASD teen

My 12 year old has autism which mainly affects emotions and interacting with people. I thought they might improve with age but they've become shorter and a lot more intense. He hits things and sometimes himself but never other people. He cant express what he's thinking so he screams and cries but only at home. He can calm himself down. He refuses to talk to anyone else who might be ale to help.

It's affecting us. We don't go out much. He masks at school. He has an EHCP that I applied for. SEND provision at school ok but they don't reply to emails. We have a discrimination claim in with SEND tribunal.

Do we just carry on doing our best? Is it normal for teens with ASD to be like this?
