sleep issues

hi there,

I am new here and my daughter actually has ADHD but wasnt sure where else to post. She is 7 yrs old.

My daughter has always had sleep issues but they were getting better, they then got bad again so I tried sleep meds from her peditition but they didnt work so I no longer am using them.

However we have got so bad in the last week, with being a nightmare at bedtime then awake pretty much all night. The last three nights have been murder!!! I am physically exhausted and dont know what to do anymore, am sat here in tears, I try so hard not to get angry with her but its so hard!!!

I jsut dont know what to do for the best to help her, I dont know how she functions, the only way I have got her to settle tonight is let her get into my bed but I obviously dont what to make a habit of it!!!

I also know it is partly down to her ADHD but still want to be able to help her at night, I dread nighttimes in my house at the moment and also think it is so hard as I am a single parent so no respite from the nighttime breaks so to speak.

  • Hi - my son hasn't got ADHD so I cannot comment on how that would affect your child apart from in layperson's terms.  There are people on the posts who have experience of ADHD so they may be along soon to give advice.  There may be info via the home page. I do feel for you.  Sleep deprivation is awful, especially when you can't catch up on your sleep during the day.  My son had trouble sleeping for the 1st 6 months of his life.  Then he was ok for a number of months, then he wasn't again.   Overall I think he sleep pattern didn't settle properly until he was 7/8.  I've found with him that he liked a routine + that normally settled him.  He developed his own rules regarding this + always liked time to settle down in bed.  He needed to know : when bedtime was, what it involved in detail, eg: a drink, toilet, bath, pjs, 20 minute chat about things he wanted to talk about, followed by 30 mins where he could look at his tv/books or do his writing. Does she have a routine.  Routine worked for my son but he didn't have ADHD.  I also let him sleep with me for a period of time + we both got a reasonable night's sleep that way.  I was a single parent, which made it easier.  After a while I decorated his room with paper I thought he would like.  I tried to make it as interesting as possible for him + although quite young, he contributed to the process.  He was then happier to sleep there.  Hope others can be more helpfulSmile
