Clubs and separation anxiety

Hi there, 

My daughter is 5 and recently diagnosed ASD but I am pretty sure PDA profile. She is really keen to do clubs such as gymnastics and dance etc but she will only do them if I can stay as she has extreme separation anxiety. When I ask the clubs and explain they say that they cannot do that as it disrupts the children and they can't let every parent stay....has anyone had any experience of this? I feel like it is a form of discrimination as she is missing out on something that she literally cannot do unless I'm there. we did try to do a club and signed up, paid all the money and it ended up in disaster so I am loathe to do it again and my daughter won't anyway....be interested to hear if anyone else has this challenge and their approach.   • This may not be advice but I feel you on this.

    I have done it all, football, swimming, gym. It can feel really lonely at times. I understand. 

    My little boy is also 5 with ASD and SPD. We have now taken him to a swim class we can get in with him, but still find he struggles. I think its so difficult to try and find the balance between having people understand the importance of your presence whilst them trying to understanding autism itself.

    Being 5 is hard never mind having to cope with asd. Some children are so very shy and other extremely confident at this age, so classes I find at this age are so variable. 

    I really try to pre empty to everyone our situation before and on the day of the club whatever it may be. Stress you are there to make her experience more enjoyable. So what who looks, or it goes against the norm?  Don't let yourself get into the headspace of feeling discriminated for it.  

    I've found if people want to help, they will allow your presence. Keep going your doing amazing and your little girl is lucky to have you! I hope you find a happy medium - I also have to tell myself the above daily. 

    Like I said - this may not be help.
