family court and autism

My son 14 just diagnosed as ASD, Is subject to family court proceedings.

All actions ordered are sending him into meltdowns and I have to encourage him to take part.

He has always had meltdwns and lockdowns but the anxiety attached to court has created meltdowns where the triggers could be anything.

I am his Mum , he is on a waiting list for a counsellor, BUT THERE IS A LONG WAITING LIST.

What can I do to help him?

The court and CAFCASS are either not autism friendly or uneducated about autism and taking it into account when making court orders. So the Judge ' my nephew has autism' a psychologist ' my grandson has aiutism' that is the sum of their knowledge.

Any advice would be gratefully received

  • Talk to your solicitor and/or your son's guardian ad litem. Ask if they can instruct an Independent Social Worker or psychologist with expertise in autism to meet your son and submit a report.  You would probably do well to talk to NAS advice line also.  Good luck!
