How to explain Autism to a 10 year old girl

Hi.

We had the first appointment for my daughter yesterday and she is on the Autism spectrum yet to be diagnosed. Obviously all of this is new for me too so I need to educate myself. However, any tips on how to explain it to her? Any books?

The lady we saw explained it as having super powers as her brain functions differently to others. This is great but doesn’t provide understanding as to why she feels different to others, why she goes from 1 to 1000 just like that, why she has difficulties with socks or socialising.

I want to provide her with that understanding so we’re in a way on the same page

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, links etc

  • I would recommend the book Spectrum Women: Walking to the Beat of Autism. It’s among the best resources I’ve found.

I would suggest an approach offered in the book: get her to name some of her strengths, and some of the things she finds more difficult. If she struggles with identifying these, gently point them out to her. Then explain she’s not alone: there’s a whole community of people, the autistic or autie or spectrum community, who understand. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask for clarification or any followup :)
