How to explain Autism to a 10 year old girl

Hi.

We had the first appointment for my daughter yesterday and she is on the Autism spectrum yet to be diagnosed. Obviously all of this is new for me too so I need to educate myself. However, any tips on how to explain it to her? Any books?

The lady we saw explained it as having super powers as her brain functions differently to others. This is great but doesn’t provide understanding as to why she feels different to others, why she goes from 1 to 1000 just like that, why she has difficulties with socks or socialising.

I want to provide her with that understanding so we’re in a way on the same page

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, links etc

  • Being autistic means our brains are wired differently to allistic brains

Trying to mask emotions that are to much leads to overloading the dam holding them, to you it will look like going from 1 to 1000 in a sec

our senses are either hyper or hypo sensitive (socks problem)

Differently build Theory of Mind leads to constant misunderstandings and avoiding socialising because others won't meet half way to communicate effectively.
