Assisted Nurseries

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice please? My boy has been diagnosed with Autism at 2years 7months and he has been attending mainstream nursery for 2 days a week for over a year. I don't feel the staff have time to work with him due the nursery being so busy and the staff not trained in working with autistic kids. I'm desperate to get him into an assisted place at a local nursery (stay in Scotland) and this is proving difficult as his case needs to go in front of a panel and they decide if he gets a place. I know early intervention is the key to helping my boy speak but feel we are out of our depth and need him to get more specialised help. We have been given a Home Visiting Teacher and a Speech and Language Therapist for one hour a week. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • I feel the therapist is giving you two scenarios rather than committing herself to one or the other as to whether your son will talk.  This is because she cant honestly tell you which way it will go at the moment.  Very frustrating and worrying for you as a parent.  So you've had the good news and maybe the not so good news, BUT its very likely your son will talk.  I know 6 autistic people ranging from age 13 to 24 and they all speak. SO take that as a positive thing ok.  I would take it one day at a time if I was you and again go with the flow. It sounds like you are doing an excellent job as his mum and carer. And if hes babbling then I take that as being very positive.  But I'm not an expert. Time will tell and all you can do is exactly as you have been doing since he was born which is tender loving care.  And take care yourself x
