Assisted Nurseries

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice please? My boy has been diagnosed with Autism at 2years 7months and he has been attending mainstream nursery for 2 days a week for over a year. I don't feel the staff have time to work with him due the nursery being so busy and the staff not trained in working with autistic kids. I'm desperate to get him into an assisted place at a local nursery (stay in Scotland) and this is proving difficult as his case needs to go in front of a panel and they decide if he gets a place. I know early intervention is the key to helping my boy speak but feel we are out of our depth and need him to get more specialised help. We have been given a Home Visiting Teacher and a Speech and Language Therapist for one hour a week. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Thanks for getting back to me and yes I think I will go to the GP as well to get them on board by getting a letter from them. I just feel so frustrated as I was at my boy's speech and language therapist today, this was out first initial meeting to find out about my son and she told me that they would not be doing therapy with my son but be putting strategies in place for us and his nursery. She told me this is all they can do at the moment due to his age and my son needs to have a DESIRE to speak and he may not speak. He may communicate through pictures, signs etc. This is a huge worry for me cause he babbles so much and looks at us when he is doing this, I just thought because he was vocal there would be a good chance he would learn to speak. I feel so out of my depth as they have told me I'm doing all the right things and its a waiting game. Does anyone know if it is more likely that autistic kids don't learn to speak..... sorry just desperate to hear from parents who have the same thoughts.
