DLA / CDP

Hi, I hope its ok to post a question about benefits here.

I'm in the process of applying for Child Disability Payment, which is the Scottish equivalent of DLA and with similar sorts of questions. It feels like a relentless process. I've read lots of guidance online but the more I read the more I get confused how anxiety fits into things. It seems that anxiety in itself wouldn't be counted as a disability for the purposes of the assessment, but anxiety caused by autism would. Is that correct?

My son was initially referred to CAMHS for anxiety issues two years ago, but in the meantime developed a whole host of other issues with sleep, eating, literacy, tics etc. It was very obvious to me that he is autistic so I pushed for an assessment despite his Dad (separated) not agreeing that there were any problems. I finally recently got the ASD diagnosis confirmed and was advised that I can apply for CDP. But its never been clarified that the anxiety is due to his autism or whether he also has an anxiety disorder in addition. So I'm not sure how to answer the questions - do I need to keep referring back to autism diagnosis in every section or can I just write about how his anxiety affects certain situations?

Thanks!

  • In each section mention anything that is relevant even if you’ve mentioned it in a previous section. So if you’ve mentioned anxiety and it being fed by him being autistic, keep saying it over and over. Same applies for all challenges. You should take the worst day he’s ever had and you and then use that as the norm.
