Toilet issues

My 6 year old son will not go to the toilet on his own. Despite encouragement he insists on somebody pulling his trousers down and “aiming” for him. There is no physical reason why he cannot do this. Does anybody else have a similar problem and any suggestions / tips to help make him more independent in this respect?
