Getting a diagnosis

Hi all,

My daughter is 8, and about 2 months ago I had a meeting with her teacher and the senco officer at school, who spoke to me about certain things that were worrying to them. After that they got the education psychologist in to observe and see if there was a issue with her.

Couple months down the line and we have had the report back and says that she seems to be on the spectrum, I'm feeling like a really crap mum, because she has started shutting down on me and also lashing out at me which before wasn't so bad. I cried and cried when I went the doctors to let them see for themselves what I deal with.

Questions are

If you as a parent have mental health issues how do you cope?

How long after speaking to gp did u get help?

  • As an autistic child, I hate for my mum to blame herself. You didn't cause your child to be autistic, so please don't blame yourself.

I know this isn't one of your questions, but I don't think you should get your child referred through a GP. They didn't help me at all. The way I received my appointments is by being referred to CAMHs by a private counsellor and my school. It's definitely best to go private, in my opinion – not through a GP. Because your child's school is aware of her potentially being autistic, they should be able to get her a referral if you speak to them.

Sort of related to your last question, it took me one year to receive an appointment, but this got cancelled due to the pandemic. It took me another two years to get an actual assessment. It's a very long process, but you have support here. :-)

  • Thank you for that advice unfortunately the school said to go through g.p so that is unfortunately the step I've taken.

CAMHS have been in touch which I was surprised.

    Just awaiting appointment now
