Toileting

We are trying to toilet train our son who is nearly six, he is under assessment for ASD as he has many of the traits. He also has expressive and receptive language delay, Toilet training is a long process, he sometimes wees and poohs in the toilet but rarely just goes and sits on the toilet to wee and pooh, of his own accord.  When he has he’s used the potty to do it. How do we teach him to recognise the signs he needs the toilet.?

  • Regarding recognizing the need to use the toilet, my teenage son still often goes last minute and doesn't realize his need until desperate.

Regarding using the toilet just wondering if he is concerned about slipping and whether a child's insert to leave in the middle for him might help.

  • Thank you for your reply. He doesn’t appear to be worried about slipping. He has started to say he needs the toilet and has sat on it once after saying this but hasn’t weed or poohed in it yet. He is fussy about who takes him. He will mainly let his Dad take him and his Teaching Assistants at school, occasionally his Grandma or Aunty but rarely me. They all have different techniques to encourage him.
