Employment advice for our 18yr old Autistic Son.

Hi, Our son is about to start full time employment as a lifeguard next week at our city swimming pool - does he have to tell his employer he is Autistic? The application form said 'Do you consider yourself to be disabled? ' , he doesn't so answered no. He struggles with reading and writing as also diagnosed with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia, and his employer IS aware of this. He has has passed all swimming, rescuing, first aid and CPR courses without help and achieved strongest and fastest swimmer and rescuer. He has his certificates and qualifications, but he's terrified if he tells his employer they will no longer want him?.

Just wondered does he legally have to say?

Thanks in advance.

  • He’s answered the actual question they’ve asked (if the wording is exactly as you’ve written here) honestly hasn’t he? It’s asking if he ‘considers himself’ to be disabled - and he doesn’t. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that as he’s answering the question honestly.

It’s interesting that they’ve worded it that way really.

It’s fantastic that your son has found this job - how exciting! Please encourage him not to worry - he’s done nothing wrong in answering this question honestly. It would be such a shame to spoil the excitement of his new job by worrying about this!

By the sound of it this is the perfect job for your son - and they are very lucky to have him!
