Help needed please - support for 13 year old

Sorry if this is quite long, I'm not sure where to go for support. My 13 year old has always struggled with certain areas, particularly around regulating his emotions.

We went through an autism diagnosis a couple of years ago but were told he didn't fit the criteria for diagnosis and that seemed to be that. However he is struggling at school (behaviour wise rather than work wise) and gets overwhelmed easily. Once he is overwhelmed he can't calm down and unless he can have time by himself he starts to spiral. The school have put some things in place to try to help but they think that he is autistic and suggested we look again at this, they are really shocked that he didn't get a diagnosis previously. I am inclined to agree with them. However, is this even something you can do and how would we go about getting another diagnosis?

I think he really needs some help with how to cope when he starts to feel overwhelmed but I don't know where to start.

If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks

  • Thanks very much for the messages and ideas. Interesting to know that other people haven't received a diagnosis originally but have subsequently. School have put some areas in place like being able to leave class if he's overwhelmed. They offered him the option to leave class early for changeover but he didn't want to do that.

Id like to start a conversation with him about possibly being autistic as I think it might help him to understand why he feels differently to other kids. However Im not sure where to start. Are there any useful books or videos that might help?
