Help needed please - support for 13 year old

Sorry if this is quite long, I'm not sure where to go for support. My 13 year old has always struggled with certain areas, particularly around regulating his emotions.

We went through an autism diagnosis a couple of years ago but were told he didn't fit the criteria for diagnosis and that seemed to be that. However he is struggling at school (behaviour wise rather than work wise) and gets overwhelmed easily. Once he is overwhelmed he can't calm down and unless he can have time by himself he starts to spiral. The school have put some things in place to try to help but they think that he is autistic and suggested we look again at this, they are really shocked that he didn't get a diagnosis previously. I am inclined to agree with them. However, is this even something you can do and how would we go about getting another diagnosis?

I think he really needs some help with how to cope when he starts to feel overwhelmed but I don't know where to start.

If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks

  • Hiya,

if possible, get the school to write to the doctor that they believe your son is showing signs of autism, and then speak to the doctor yourself. the letter from the school will mean that doctor can't ignore you. although i believe the waiting list is still pretty long so going private might be an alternative

but in regard to second diagnosis's, my cousin was told he wasn't autistic and then a couple of years later was referred again and received a diagnosis. i think it's more common than we think.

maybe ask him what he needs when he feels overwhelmed? personally i really do just need space

    Good luck!
