ASD assessment – what to expect?

Hello,

We have our son's first paediatrics assessment for ASD coming up and I'm just wondering what kind of tests they'll be doing. He's only 4 so I understand he's quite young for a diagnosis... We'll be armed with a long list of behaviours and traits to give them, along with his referral from GP and HV, as well as his assessment from Nursery. I'm a little worried we'll be fobbed off and will have to fight our case – any advice on that front? Any positive/negative experiences with paeds?

Thank you!

  • My son was a lot older, but the paediatrician on the first appointment was lovely. After some time with her and son he went with his Dad and I spoke with her answering further questions.

The actual assessment which was later involved tasks to do like puzzles. We sat in the room next door and watched. He couldn't see us but was shown where we were first. This paediatrician was lovely too.

Worth taking drink and snack in case you have to wait a while.
