Help please.

Hi everyone,

My sister is 40years old and has always really struggled in social situations. Her interactions with outside world is always nearly negative. She's had problems with her neighbours, people at the bus stops, security guards, shopkeepers, work colleagues..the list goes on.

We have alway suspected she's on the spectrum but no one has ever mentioned it upfront to her. The problem now is that her interactions are becoming more aggressive and she ends up in sticky situations. How can I help her to self refer or how can I talk to her about this so that she can access help/counselling as she is also highly anxious.

Thanks in advance.

  • What you’ve written here doesn’t seem to indicate autism to me. The vast, VAST  majority of autistic people are not aggressive and confrontational. I would do a bit more research  into Autism to see if your assumption is accurate.
The Gp would be a good place to start to look into a possible mental health diagnosis - but your sister needs to be willing to do that obviously.
I’m sorry - it all sounds very upsetting for both of you. Sending best wishes and I hope you can get some support for her as she is obviously struggling and unhappy. Good luck.

  • Thank you for your response. In short she has a history of sensory issues, bone dyspraxia, selective mutism as a child, what we called mood swings growing up. Like younsay I dont know what she actually has but we do have a history of autism now being diagnosed in the younger generations. I'm at such a loss because I dont know how to get her to the GP to get diagnosed.
