Referral advice for 6 yr old

Can anyone advise me how I can get a referral for my daughter as I suspect she may have an ASD just like myself.

Senco are already envolved at school for her reading and proccesing of information etc but I'd like to know how I can get her tested for Autism as I don't want her struggling through school like I did myself.

  • Thank you for both your replies we shall look into this. Even a 2 to 3 year wait isn't that bad considering all the COVID setbacks to the NHS.

I shall book an appointment with the GP first and see what they can do. Yes she is still getting help with SENCO so this is worth chasing up too.

  • Unfortunately, in many areas there is a long wait for a specialist ASD assessment - in many cases, we are talking about two to three years. Talk to your child's SENCO and to her GP.  If you are still engaged with services, maybe your clinician may be able to offer advice. Finally, there is the private route, but unfortunately, that is expensive.

Talk to the SENCo about making a parental request for an Ask for an EHCP,  and be prepared to go to tribunal if the LEA refuse an assessment.

  • Your school SENCO can make a referral or just make an appointment with your GP and they will be able to assist you.
