finding the right school.

hi.  Just wondering about other peoples experience with school.

At the moment my 8 year old dislikes going to her mainstream school, and even though they try to assist her, she still dislikes going, saying'' there's too much going on.''

Iam wondering if she would fit in better with a specialist school, or keeping her where she is,in order to adapt to the neuro typical world.

Can anyone share their stories, and tell me what they liked/disliked about the different schools.

  • My daughter, 15, has been in a mainstream school her whole life but a few years ago, starting secondary school, she was described as the worst student in the school. She couldn't cope. She would bang on doors, walls, windows, run around the school, refuse to work. She wasn't learning. It was torture for her but she kept going because school was part of her routine. 

    We tried homeschooling but she got bored and would run out the house so we stopped that. 

    Lastly, we chose a special school specialising in autism itself. She is a different person. She is really happy and will be really upset if she doesn't go in. I like this school because they are trained and understand autism and everything that comes with it. They understand her behaviour really well. Students are always on a 1:1 or 2:1 basis, my daughter is 2:1. They won't give up on the children unlike the mainstream schools did. Personally, from my experience, I prefer special schools.

    thank you. The school she is in at the moment is ok but at times, I think they struggle with her behaviour, and i don't think she will be able to cope with secondary school.
