Moving house

My 11 year (undiagnosed) is really struggling with the fact we have to move house - any advice on how to best support my child through this would really be appreciated

  • Moving house is difficult. It also depends on how far you are moving. Only done it once locally and it took a few months before he felt comfortable and that the new home was better. After we moved there a few things that needed doing. As each thing got done he felt happy as these things worried him that we had done the wrong thing.

Getting Wi Fi set up asap and TV was essential.

Keep changes as limited as possible and kept familiar things unpacked as long as possible.

Move mid week during term time so last few days limited time at the chaotic home and two days after to unpack as much as possible.

Pack bedding rolled up in bin bags so once child's bed is ready it can be unrolled.

We were able to take some things to empty house before we moved. If not possible pack some clearly marked boxes with most important things to unpack first. Take some important things like familiar snacks in car so ready soon after arrival.

If you can make as many visits to the house/area before. Talk about it too. Our 11 year old was concerned when he visited because he had thought old owners would leave their things so had to reassure all his things would be going. He was even worried about our friendly neighbour we were leaving behind that she would be ok.

Two years later when he wants to go for a trip in the car he still wants to drive past his old house.
