Crisis plea

I'm hoping you can help with some advice about how we support my step daughter.

She is undiagnosed but has many traits of asd. Her outbursts only happen at home either ours or her mum's. School do not see the issues as she is high functioning and can mask during the school day.

I'm not sure how we would go about finding a diagnosis or even if that would be helpful.

The problem is that she is becoming increasingly violent and abusive and we're worried about the safety of her grandmother and sister who collect her from school. Even at 10, she is extremely strong during these episodes and tonight had almost pushed someone down the stairs. This was all because we had picked up a couple of items from the floor in her room.

Is there an organisation or community in Gloucester who we might tap into who might have had similar experiences and could share their solutions?

  • Hi there, sorry to hear about the struggles you are experiencing with your stepdaughter. In my experience, meltdowns are caused by a build up of stress, especially to do with the sensory/social aspects of school and masking. Have you considered finding a child therapist to help her with coping mechanisms for anger/anxiety management? A formal asc diagnosis would help with this and also with allowances at school. We are also based in the Glos area... unsure of any support groups in Gloucester itself but Malvern has quite an active autism support community.
