Just received diagnosis. How do I tell people?

Hi, my 10yo daughter has just received the outcome of her Autism assessment and they've confirmed she is Autistic.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to communicate this to people in our lives? Aside from our inner circle and her teacher, who already know she was going through assessment.

My concern is there's so much misunderstanding about Autism so I wondered if it's worth providing people with resources to help explain it at the same time.

Hi Martin, thanks so much for your reply. I will get some of those pamphlets as well as that book. I feel I need to be armed with resources as it's all new to me as well.

Yes, it is an education process as well as just giving out information. There are some pamphlets on the NAS site and lots of information on the internet. Probably the best single volume is Tony Attwood's 'Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome', despite the title it covers the autism spectrum, but concentrates on those without intellectual disability. It is useful to have something concrete to refer to.
