The Problem With ABA - Can You Join The Conversation To Solve The Problem?

I've been talking with people who work for the most common therapy for autism, ABA, Applied Behaviour Analysis discussing what we need to do to stop ABA hurting children. There's a YouTube channel called "Master ABA", the owner of this channel wants to have an open conversation with autistic people to find ways to make things better for autistic people.

The first video below is the BCBA talking with me about how to make things better, I informed her ABA workers have to stop taking autistic clients to overwhelming environments, like to stop taking people oversensitive to light to places like big shopping centres full of fluorescent lights. The second is I speaking with a father of an autistic daughter sharing some great problems about ABA.

Are you knocking autistic children off balance?

If you can, please share with them what you think ABA needs to change.

  • Watched with interest. You presented incredibly well there btw. Well done.

Just throwing out a question as a kind of Devil's advocate, here: should we change ABA or scrap it?

On the one hand traditionally this kinda tried to knock the autism out of kids; punishing/rewarding them for stimming/ not stimming, making eye contact/ not making eye contact, hugging/ not hugging people...

On the other Temple Grandin does have a point in that there are so many fully verbal autistic kids locked up in their bedrooms not seeing a life who need coaxing out of their rooms to make their contributions seen and valued some how...

Is what this is moving toward less ABA and more just gently expanding the sensory diet to the world beyond the bedroom?

Not pretending to have the answers here, just throwing out questions?

  • I believe we do need to have a service that helps autistic people learn the things that don’t come naturally, we can’t be regardless of the difficulties of those on the spectrum who are more dependent. My main problem with ABA is how regardless it is about what’s beneath the surface, I want them to take things like emotions into account.

I would like more autistic people to come out of the bedroom and share their potential and their talents with the world. I believe ABA needs changing and come up to date with our understanding of autism. I think when we reach the solution ABA will no longer fit the principles of ABA. I see the answer is in between ABA and Anti-ABA.

    Thanks for sharing.
