Covid Vaccination

My daughter, 15, needs her covid vaccination done in March. It will be her first one. We tried it months ago but it resulted in a meltdown. We tried dimming the lights, deep pressure, being in her own room but nothing helped her so we gave up. She wants it done but her anxiety and fear towards needles is through the roof.

This time, people are coming to the school and I have given permission and the heads up that she may refuse and they said they will do their best to help. She has had a negative experience around needles and willingly hasn't had one put in her for years. She's missed all her other jabs aswell. What helps you around needles?  Any advice is grateful. I need to pass it on to the school.

  • Has she ever watched operation ouch on cbbc. It is really good at explaining medical issues. I saw an episode the other week about vaccinations and they showed what happens (one of the doctors gets a flu jab in front of the camera) and it superbly shows why we need vaccinations. The only other thought I had was numbing cream from the chemist and a big reward for after.if she is worried about it hurting then reassure her by reminding her of all the times she fell over or stubbed her toe and explain that those sort of injuries are far more painful so if she was brave then she can be brave for something that won’t hurt as much. Maybe practice at home with a calpol syringe?  Hope that all  makes sense. Wishing you all the best!
