6 year old recently diagnosed

Hello, my 6 year son was diagnosed with autism last week. I just wanted to ask a question about one particular behaviour.
this is one example of it but it’s usually similar.  He was playing on his tablet this morning and when he couldn’t do it he threw it on the floor at the side of the bed. He then wanted me to pick it up for him. I told him he should pick it up as he threw it there and it was right next to him. He completely refused and just kept going on and on for me to get it. He couldn’t give me any reason why he wouldn’t get it himself. He does similar things, not just with his tablet, could about bdifferent things but it’s like once he’s decided he’s not doing it , then that’s it , even if it’s really simple.
Can anyone offer any advice please on this?

  • My son was diagnosed last week as well, he is 4. I have noticed that behavior as well. While speaking with my sons neurologist she said that he couldn't explain or express his feelings like others can, he doesn't know how to, which would result in him getting frustrated and throwing things or shutting down. If my son decides he doesn't want to do something he will stand in front of me and stare like he's seeing right through me, even if I am talking to him.

Maybe this could be why, he is having trouble expressing himself or his feelings. Did his doctor mention anything like that to you at all after his diagnosis?

  • No they didn’t, all they said was that he has autism and that’s it. I’m thinking it might be around rigid thinking , just been reading up more about that. Tonight he decided he didn’t want the tea I was making ( even though it was something he likes) and cried about it for ages and ages saying he didn’t want it
