Profile after diagnosis

Hi 

My son, 9, finally got his diagnosis before christmas and we are meeting with the neuro developmental team next week for his profile and debrief appointment.

I was diagnosed autisic in 2020 at 34 but I didn't have a profile or anything like that completed.

Does anyone know what to expect so I can calm his anxiety as he's already started to worry about it. They said to have questions or comments prepared if we want to make sure everything it covered but like what....

  • I never had one either but if it is what I think it is it’s like an advanced IQ test. It’s probably designed to map out specific mental skills to figure out which he is good at and which he is bad at.

    educators these days often talk about autistic people having ‘spiky’ profiles. Which roughly means mental areas of profound strength mixed with mental areas of profound weakness.

    for example I’m a mathematician. I can solve equations most people can’t even understand. Handel geometry in higher dimensions and non euclidian space. I also can’t remember my times tables. Just memorising a dry unremarkable grid of numbers proved impossible for me. But the level of abstraction needed for pure maths and visual thinking needed for applied maths came easily to me.


    the debrief is different. Generally you get a written report after diagnosis. Debrief is a chance to ask about anything in it that’s unclear. It’s also a ‘so what happens now’ moment because just because you know you’re autistic it doesn’t follow you will be treated differently by school / social services etc. It an opportunity to talk through what kind of referrals you might need and who might need to be made aware of the diagnosis.
