Please help, I need advice!

Good Evening. I'm hoping you can help as I have no idea where to go. My 17 year old daughter has finally got her diagnosis of HF Autism. I have no idea where to go for help and advice for her. We have had nothing up until now and she has been struggling for years. Can you direct me to a website or page or anything. She is struggling with her traits and I have no idea how to help. I hope this makes sense. Thankyou

  • Hi There!

You may find it useful to have a look at our autism page on our website which has a vast amount of information. The page contains information on the basics of what the autism spectrum is, how it's defined in a clinical sense, and the characteristics of autism: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/what-is-autism

I'm not sure what traits she has but these links might include some and ways to understand triggers and develop strategies. You may like to have a look at the following link for more information on behaviour and strategies:https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/behaviour

You may be interested in seeking some professional support regarding the behaviour. This link will help you look for professionals in your area we are aware of on the Autism Services Directory: https://www.autism.org.uk/directory You might also like to take a look at The Challenging Behaviour Foundation website for further information and advice: https://www.challengingbehaviour.org.uk. They also have an information and support service which you can contact by phone or email – details can be found here: https://www.challengingbehaviour.org.uk/for-family-carers/family-support-service/

Also, depending on your situation you may wish to contact our Transition Support service, who offer advice, support and information to young autistic people aged 14 years plus and their parents or carers on the transition to adulthood. If you would like to contact the Transition Support service, you can reach them by completing the online enquiry form here: https://www.autism.org.uk/what-we-do/help-and-support/transition-support-service

You may be interested in contacting a local National Autistic Society branch. Our branches offer support to local autistic people and their families. If you interesting in checking if there is a local branch near to you https://www.autism.org.uk/what-we-do/local-branchesOur branches are volunteer-led, and as such every branch and group is different. Some are parent support groups, some provide support and information to autistic adults, while others have office premises and run their own a drop-in service. You will need to check with a branch directly for more information on whether they are able to provide a particular service that you are interested in.

Hope you find something in that list useful Slight smile
